Tory leadership latest: Race starts to narrow down


  1. MPs will vote for a third time this afternoon as they select the final candidates to become the next PM and Tory leader
  2. The list of contenders will go down to four with the result expected at 20:00 UK time
  3. The third TV debate – scheduled to be broadcast by Sky News on Tuesday – has been cancelled, after Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss said they would not take part
  4. It comes after the pair clashed repeatedly during the latest TV debate on Sunday
  5. Ex-chancellor Sunak, who topped the first two MPs’ votes, argued with Truss and international trade minister Penny Mordaunt over the economy and taxes
  6. Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat squared off over who had the record and experience to be prime minister
  7. All five ruled out an early general election if they became PM in seven weeks’ time
  8. The government is also holding a confidence vote in itself, after blocking a similar attempt by Labour. It’s not expected to lose
